Trip StyleHeli-ski tour

Time of yearFeb - April

Just imagine it. You’re flying high above the untamed peaks of the Kamchatka Peninsula in a Russian chopper. Suited up. Skis or board at the ready.

This Kamchatka heli-skiing tour takes you to soaring ridges blanketed in untouched deep powder snow, and to the top of the majestic volcanoes of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Your helicopter touches down in the middle of nowhere – the summit of a towering and very-much-alive volcano. The Mi-8 helicopter is the ultimate chairlift, and the volcanic slopes of Kamchatka are the ultimate free ride.

As the chopper disappears from view, the sense of isolation and the sheer silence of the mountains is profound. Take a moment to meditate on exactly where you are – one of the wildest, most remote places on Earth – then take a deep breath and away you go. Kamchatka is the ultimate winter wonderland for ski enthusiasts.

Kamchatka heli-ski tour highlights:

The exact volcanoes that will be flown to on this Kamchatka Heli-skiing trip will be dependent on the weather and conditions allow. Some possible highlights include:

  • Kamchatka’s trophy volcano for heli-skiiers is Mutnovsky (2,322m). Mutnovsky consists of several cones joined together. Thousands of years ago, the main cone collapses inside the volcano and formed a massive crater with glaciers, fumaroles and boiling mud geysers. And yes, it is possible to ski into the crater, directly into the fumarole fields!
  • Viluchinsky (2,173m) is a perfectly cone-shaped volcano that boasts dozen beautiful gullies and wide slopes. Landing on the top you’ll be greeted with an incredible panoramic view through the clouds to fijord-like valleys below
  • Some volcanoes find their foothills right alongside the coast of the Pacific Ocean. In prime conditions, it’s possible to ski all the way from the top of the volcano to the ocean shore

The pristine deep powder slopes of Kamchatka are the ultimate adrenaline rush for experienced board riders and skiers. You’ll be one of a privileged handful of people to experience the majesty of this untamed terrain, rolling on endlessly beneath the blue Kamchatkan sky. Up here, there’s nothing but pure white snow for miles, and no sign of civilisation as far as the eye can see.

This Kamchatka heli-skiing expedition includes 4 full days (weather permitting) of heli-skiing with a total drop of approximately 15,000 vertical feet. Depending on conditions, possible locations include Viluchinsky (2,173 m), Avachinsky (2,741m), Mutnovsky (2,322 m) and Gorely (1,829 m).

Day 1 Welcome to Kamchatka

Arrive at Elizovo Airport, 30km from Kamchatka’s capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and transfer to the hotel, where you’ll spend the rest of the day relaxing and preparing for the adventurous days ahead.

Meet your guides for a short brief about your adventure ahead.

Day 2-3 Heli-skiing from active volcanoes

The next two days are dedicated to heli-skiing and snowboarding on some of Kamchatka’s most spectacular virgin slopes.

After breakfast each morning, our group will be picked up by helicopter and transferred to some of the most exciting heli-skiing locations Kamchatka has to offer, taking in incredible views of the mountains, the Taiga and the Pacific coast along the way.

We divide into groups of 5 to 6 people, with no less than 2 highly experienced guides to accompany each group. You’ll be given a comprehensive briefing on helicopter safety before take off, and a detailed overview of each site and the current snow conditions. On some volcanoes, such as Mutnovsky (2,322m), it’s possible to ski into the crater, with active steam vents smoking and seething all around you!

Day 4 Free day

This day is a spare day for weather fluctuations. Relax and unwind or discover a little more of what Kamchatka has to offer. You’ll be able to choose from a fantastic selection of optional* winter adventures. The activities include day treks to the volcanoes, snowmobiling or husky dog sled rides, cross-country skiing etc.

Day 5-6 Heli-skiing from active volcanoes

The Heliskiing terrain of Kamchatka is the size of Switzerland, so we eager to explore more slopes.

Conditions permitting, we should get a total of about 8 hours of helicopter time during our stay in Kamchatka. Skiable vertical is up to 1600m depending on snow conditions. Total vertical in a day is typically up to 8000m. On bad weather days, snowmobiles tend to do the heavy lifting!

Enjoy a massage session once we back to the hotel and enjoy a hot open-air pool.

Day 7 Free day

In the morning of our last day in Kamchatka, we enjoy a session of morning yoga. Choose from the variety of optional activities on offer we prepared for this day.

Day 8 Farewell hugs

After breakfast, transfer to the airport with a short detour to the local fish market.
