Fly Fishing in Kamchatka

The best fishing spots are the secret ones. Hidden away in the wild mountains of Kamchatka, inaccessible to all but the most intrepid anglers, the Icha River is a veiled paradise.

Fishing in Kamchatka takes you to a breathtakingly beautiful, clear flowing 235km long river that flows off the slopes of the immense Ichinsky Volcano in western Kamchatka, winding its way through pristine alpine forest before emptying into the Sea of Okhotsk. Plunging to 100m in its deepest parts and swirling with swift, rocky rapids, the Icha River is the perfect environment for many of the world’s most prized freshwater game fish. Spawning fish flock here in countless numbers in the summer – chinook, steelhead, sockeye, pink salmon, silver salmon, chum, rainbow trout, brook trout and brown trout.

But there’s more to this Kamchatka fly fishing trip than just the prospect of bagging the ultimate catch. Over six days you’ll explore the length of this far-flung river on rafts, navigating grade two and three rapids in the narrow twists and turns of its upper reaches. Camping on the river banks and cooking your catch on an open fire, the feeling of isolation and a return to simpler living is profound and humbling.
While you might feel a million miles away from civilisation, remember, you are not alone here. At any time, you could meet a legend – one of Kamchatka’s famous brown bears, who are here, just like you, to catch the perfect fish! On this Kamchatka fishing tour, you’ll also spend two evenings in an indigenous village in the mountains, and get a taste of real life and survival in this remote and rugged part of the world.

Day 1:Arrival and transfer

Welcome to Kamchatka, a land born of ice and volcanoes. Russia's far eastern peninsula, is bound by the Pacific Ocean and boasts 14,000 streams and rivers etched into its mountainous interior. Our group will meet at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky airport and transfer to the settlement of Milkovo, 300km to the north, or about a 3.5 hour drive. As an option, we can detour to the natural hot springs in Malkinskie (about 10km off the highway) where we can take a relaxing dip for an hour or two. Upon arrival in Milkovo village, we settle into the local hunter’s hut for dinner and a briefing on the fishing trip ahead.

Day 2:Icha river camp site

After breakfast at the hut, we depart for the starting point of our fishing trip on the Icha River (100km, 1.5 hours). Check the base lodge and spend a leisurely afternoon on the river bank, testing out your gear and techniques and targeting salmon and trout. Prepare the evenings catch, share stories around the campfire and enjoy a good night’s rest, ready for the five big days ahead.

Day 3-7:Fishing days on Icha river

The next five days are spent exploring the Icha River by rafts. Along the way, we’ll visit a waterfall where salmon throw themselves out of the water in an attempt to reach their spawning grounds at the top – an awe inspiring spectacle! In the middle of the river we will visit the indigenous Even people sattlement, where you can learn about their life and traditions. On day 7, after a day’s fishing, we head back to Milkovo village where we spend the evening.

Day 8:Journey back to civilisation

Today we journey back from Milkovo village to the relative hustle and bustle of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Day 9:Farewell hugs

After breakfast in the hotel, you'll be transferred to the airport. If you would like to spend some more time in Kamchatka, we also offer sea fishing experience and various excursions to Kamchatka's volcanoes. Contact us for more information.
